University Rankings





University of Crete was ranked first in Greece and 351-400 worldwide in the 2021 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.


 The THE  World University Rankings, now in its 17th year, focus on a selected frame of the world’s research intensive universities, rather than the total global ‘pool’ of over 20,000 Higher Education Institutions. 13 indicators are used to measure University performance in teaching, research output and impact, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.  In one particular area, citations, used as an indicator of research impact and influence, the UoC continues to punch above its weight – ranking #120 worldwide.


In terms of scientific fields, the University’s School of Medicine ranks among the top 200 worldwide in  the 2020 THE World University Rankings by Subject at  #176–200 for Pre-clinical, Clinical & Health.




Reflecting in particular its research strengths, University of Crete is ranked =76 in the 2020 THE Young University Rankings.  This is the ninth year running that the University of Crete has been included among the top 100 best research-intensive universities under 50 years old.




Ranked =59, the University is also in the top 100 of the 2020 THE Emerging Economies University Rankings. In terms of research influence, as measured by citations, University of Crete is in a leading position at #13 among the 533 universities included in the 2020 ranking.





In the US News 2020 Best Global Universities ranking of 1500 research-intensive universities powered by Clarivate Analytics, the University is ranked #563 worldwide, #255 in Europe and #4 in Greece.  In terms of research impact, as indicated by ‘Normalized Citation Impact’, the University ranks #249 worldwide.  It is also notable, given the significance of international collaborative papers as a marker of quality, that the UoC ranks #80 worldwide on this performance indicator. 





The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2020  includes University of Crete among the 1176 Universities from 65 countries worldwide that have produced over 800 Web of Science core publications in the period 2015-2018 (using fractional counting).  According to the size adjusted indicator of high impact publications as a percentage of a University’s publications (PP top 10%), the University of Crete ranks #197 among the total 413 European Universities listed.

Nature Indexalso shows the University among the leading research producing organizations,at #187 by article count among the 1000+ European Academic Organizations listed with publications in the prestigious Nature journals for the year up to 30 April 2020. 




The University of Crete takes part in the QS World University Rankings  (ranked #800-1000 in 2021), and also in U-MULTIRANK. The latter is open to all types of higher education institutions and compares and grades HEI performance across five broad dimensions (teaching and learning, regional engagement, knowledge transfer, international orientation and research). The Ready Made Rankings tool again shows that the University’s primary strengths are in research and research linkages.
