Unit Responsibilities

The Unit operates at Department level and is entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • Coordinating, mobilizing, and directing the University of Crete’s services in emergency situations or during periods of national crisis.
  • Implementing and assessing policies and measures related to safety and security across University premises, with the objective of ensuring the uninterrupted and effective conduct of the University’s educational, research, administrative, and other activities.
  • Providing administrative and operational support to the University of Crete Safety and Security Committee in the discharge of its duties.

 

The Department reports directly to the Rector or to the Vice Rector designated by the Rector and is responsible for:

  • Ensuring the orderly and efficient operation of the University of Crete.

  • Safeguarding and protecting the University’s facilities, infrastructure, and assets.

  • Developing specialized emergency preparedness and response plans for incidents such as earthquakes, fires, floods, and other emergencies.

  • Collaborating with regional and public authorities to coordinate response actions during emergencies.

  • Overseeing the development of staff awareness and training programmes and monitoring their implementation by the competent services.

  • Identifying and maintaining designated emergency assembly areas for staff and ensuring their continued suitability and accessibility.

  • Planning initiatives and submitting recommendations to the Safety and Security Committee aimed at enhancing the protection of the University’s infrastructure, facilities, and equipment.

  • Supporting the Rector or the designated Vice Rector on matters relating to safety, security, and emergency preparedness, as well as assisting the Safety and Security Committee in carrying out its mandate.

  • Designing and implementing programmes, seminars, awareness campaigns, informational events, and related initiatives, in collaboration with public-sector bodies and community organizations, with the aim of promoting awareness within the Academic Community regarding crime prevention, risk mitigation, and emergency preparedness.

  • Maintaining an inventory of all security systems, electronic monitoring systems, and security-related technological equipment of the University, and preparing security and disaster management plans in cooperation with the competent authorities.

  • Addressing any other matters related to emergency planning and preparedness in accordance with the applicable legal and regulatory framework.

  • Undertaking any additional responsibilities assigned under the provisions of applicable legislation.
