Honorary Doctorate Conferral Ceremony for Professor Randy Katz, University of California, Berkeley
On December 16, 2025, the University of Crete held the conferral ceremony of Professor Randy Katz, Emeritus Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, as Honorary Doctor of the Department of Computer Science (CSD) of the University of Crete. The ceremony took place in Voutes Campus, Heraklion.
Through this honorary distinction, the University of Crete recognizes Professor Katz’s significant contribution to the advancement of contemporary Computer Science and, in particular, to Computer Architecture—especially Cache Coherence—as well as to the Architecture and Software of RAID Storage Systems, the Architecture and Software of Data Centers, the Architecture and Software of Adaptive Distributed Systems, Wireless Networks, and Very Large-Scale Internet/planetary-scale Service Networks.
The ceremony opened with an address by Professor Maria Vamvakaki, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Lifelong Learning, and Research Policy of the University of Crete, followed by a welcome address from the Chair of the Department of Computer Science, Professor Konstantinos Magoutis.
Subsequently, Emeritus Professor of the Department of Computer Science, Mr. Manolis Katevenis, presented the scientific work and overall contribution of the honoree.
The ceremony concluded with the response address and lecture by the honoree, entitled: “An Experimental Computer Scientist’s Academic Career in Six Projects.”
The ceremony highlighted the lasting impact of Professor Katz’s scholarly legacy and underscored the vital role of visionary research in advancing the global academic community.
