The University of Crete at the Second World Conference of Classics

The Second World Conference of Classics concludes today, Wednesday, 10 June 2026, at the Academy of Athens. The Conference is co-organised by the Academy of Athens and the Chinese School of Classical Studies at Athens.

The opening ceremony took place in a highly formal setting, in the presence of representatives of the political and academic leadership of Greece and China, as well as distinguished scholars from across the world.

Among the officials attending the ceremony were the former President of the Hellenic Republic and Member of the Academy of Athens, Prokopios Pavlopoulos; the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni; the Deputy Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Nikos Papaioannou; Professor Wang Yong, President of the Chinese Centre for Greek and Chinese Ancient Civilizations; as well as Rectors and representatives of Greek universities. Members and representatives of the Academy of Athens and of the Chinese academic community also attended the ceremony.

The University of Crete is represented at the Conference by:

  • Professor Melina Tamiolaki, Vice-Rector for Development, International Relations and Outreach;
  • Professor Chloe Balla, President of KELKIP and Professor at the Department of Philosophy;
  • Nikos Litinas, Associate Professor of Classical Philology at the Department of Philosophy;
  • and Eleni Papadogiannaki, Laboratory Teaching Staff member in the Division of Classical Studies of the Department of Philosophy.

Throughout the Conference, distinguished academics and researchers examine the enduring importance of classical thought and its contribution to understanding and addressing contemporary social, cultural, and technological challenges.

The participation of the University of Crete in this major international event highlights its strong academic presence and contribution to Classical Studies. It also strengthens the University’s international outreach, promotes global academic dialogue, and further develops cooperation between the Greek and Chinese scholarly communities.
