University of Crete Secures Funding for the STEPS Project under Horizon Europe – MSCA & Citizens 2025

The University of Crete is pleased to announce that it has secured funding for the project “Science for Growth – Empowering Minds (STEPS)” under the European Union’s Horizon Europe – MSCA & Citizens 2025 program.

The project is coordinated by the University of Crete in collaboration with the Technical University of Crete and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR).

The primary objective of STEPS is to strengthen the relationship between science and society by promoting scientific literacy, enhancing public understanding of research, and encouraging citizens’ active participation in science and innovation activities. The project is grounded in contemporary psychoeducational approaches, with a particular focus on the Growth Mindset framework, fostering learning through effort, critical thinking, and creativity.

STEPS integrates two flagship European initiatives: European Researchers’ Night and Researchers at Schools, creating a comprehensive framework of activities designed for students, educators, researchers, and the wider public.

Over its 24-month implementation period, the project is expected to:

  • Engage more than 12,000 citizens through public science activities;
  • Involve at least 5,000 students and 200 educators in educational programs and outreach initiatives;
  • Mobilize more than 200 researchers in science communication and dissemination activities;
  • Promote gender equality and inclusion, with particular emphasis on reaching remote and underrepresented communities.

The project aligns with key strategic priorities of the European Union, including the European Green Deal, Digital Transformation, and the advancement of STEM/STEAM education, highlighting the vital role of research in addressing contemporary societal challenges.

The implementation of STEPS is expected to further strengthen the international profile and outreach of the University of Crete, reinforcing its position as a dynamic hub for research, education, and innovation within the European Research Area.
