The Department of Philology of the University of Crete is pleased to announce the organization of the 7th Summer School in Linguistics (CreteLing 2026), which will take place at the Gallos University Campus in Rethymno, Crete, from July 18 to July 31, 2026.
This year’s program will bring together approximately 300 students, researchers, and scholars from 140 universities around the world. The academic program will be delivered by 44 distinguished faculty members from leading institutions, including MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, New York University (NYU), UCLA, and the École Normale Supérieure Paris.
CreteLing has established itself as a globally recognized institution in the field of theoretical linguistics. Following six highly successful editions, the summer school is organized by the Linguistics Division of the University of Crete in collaboration with Professor Sabine Iatridou of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), serving as a major meeting point for the international linguistics community.
The program features two weeks of intensive academic activity, including courses, seminars, interactive sessions, and research poster presentations. A special highlight of this year’s event will be the symposium “Linguistic Theory at the Age of LLMs: A Dialogue,” scheduled for July 22, 2026. The symposium will explore the relationship between contemporary theoretical linguistics and Large Language Models (LLMs), emphasizing the contribution of linguistic theory to advances in artificial intelligence.
Over the years, CreteLing has evolved into one of the most significant international summer education programs in theoretical linguistics, contributing substantially to the global visibility of the University of Crete and reinforcing Crete’s reputation as a destination for high-level academic and scientific events.
The University of Crete remains firmly committed to open and equitable access to knowledge by offering free participation to its students and alumni.
The 2026 edition is expected to once again serve as a vibrant meeting point for researchers and students from across the globe, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the development of new international research networks.
