Times Higher Education (THE) published its tenth annual Young University Rankings on 23 June 2021, and for the tenth year running the University of Crete has been included among the top 100 best research-intensive universities under 50 years old.
The 2021 Young University Rankings includes 475 institutions worldwide, up from 414 last year. At #79 University of Crete holds its’ place despite the numbers of new entrants, and also heads the list of the 4 Greek universities included in the ranking.
The Young University Ranking are based on the same metrics as the THE World University Rankings for teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. However, to reflect the characteristics of younger universities less weighting is given to academic reputation [which is closely associated with age, heritage and endowment wealth and thus favors the traditional elite of old universities] and more emphasis is given to factors such as research productivity, staff-student ratios, institutional income and doctoral education..
The strongest performance indicator for University of Crete is research impact, as measured by citations, with the University ranking #27 worldwide for citations in 2021 among the young universities included in this ranking.
The fact that University of Crete is again in the top 80 in this prestigious ranking is a significant achievement in itself and impressive given the challenging conditions in Greece that have been impacting on education and research. It is a credit to the academic community.
