The annual Aristotelian reading gathering, which has been conducted for fifteen years by Princeton University’s Classical Philosophy Program with funding from the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies, took place at Plakias Elementary School from July 8–12.
Beyond imparting a thorough understanding of Aristotle’s ideas, these gatherings aim to foster collaboration between the Princeton university community and its Greek university counterparts. Additionally, third- and second-year students will receive instruction in the translation and commentary of philosophical texts from ancient Greek into English.
Twenty-four students—twelve from Princeton University and twelve from Greece (from NKUA, AUTH, University of Patras, and of course the Departments of Philosophy and Philology of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Crete—studied Aristotle’s Poetics in the ceremonial hall of the Primary School, accompanied by professors from their respective institutions. During their time there, they were able to take in the unmatched natural beauty of the region and the hospitality of Plakias’ accommodations.
