Call for Αpplications to the Graduate Program“Molecular Basis of Human Diseases” (2025-2026)

The Medical School of the University of Crete announces that Αpplications for the academic
year 2025-2026 regarding the Graduate Program in “Molecular Basis of Human Diseases”,
will open on April 7, 2025.
The Program leads to a Μaster’s degree (MSc) in “Molecular Basis of Human Diseases” after
four (4) academic semesters.
The Program aims to promote the convergence between clinical and basic biomedical
science and research through the promotion of collaboration between clinical and basic
science professors and the co-supervision of the research of the students of this Program.
Students in the Program are trained to be able:

  • to understand the basic pathogenic mechanisms of major human diseases based on the
    knowledge acquired at the cellular & molecular level
  • to develop a critical attitude towards scientific knowledge and approach to the field of
    biomedical sciences
  • to acquire the theoretical background and skills relevant to basic, translational and clinical
    research to contribute to the creation of new knowledge and gain sufficient experience for
    future contribution to biomedical research
  • to acquire skills such as presenting a paper to an audience, writing review articles and
    writing research proposals
  • to learn about good laboratory practices and laboratory safety rules
  • to be informed and sensitized on ethics and ethics in research

The duration of studies is four (4) academic semesters. The 1st semester begins in the Fall of
each year. During the first two (2) semesters students attend classes and participate in two (2)
laboratory rotations. During the third and fourth semester original research is conducted for
the writing of the Master’s Thesis. The total number of ECTS required for the Master’s
degree is 120.
The Program is full-time with obligatory attendance and the courses require the physical
presence of the students. The language of the Program is English.
Eligible applicants should hold an MD or BSc degree from Departments of Schools of Health
Sciences (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy) or Biological Sciences (Biology, Molecular
Biology, Genetic, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemistry).
