A play titled “The Great Confucianist Zhang Zai” will be presented as part of the Summer School “Nature and Culture in Crete, from Antiquity to the Present Day,” which is being hosted by the University of Crete’s Faculty of Philosophy and the Center of Greek and Chinese Civilizations (KELKIP).
The show introduced the Cretan audience to the ideas of Zhang Zai (1020-1077), a Confucian disciple and the founder of the Guanxue School. It was directed and performed by students from Shaanxi Normal University’s Summer School in Xi’an.
Members of the University of Crete’s academic community, locals, and representatives of the region’s authorities and cultural institutions attended the performance. They greeted each other, exchanged gifts, and expressed their hopes for the continuation of similar activities with the Chinese delegation.
The Municipality of Anogia provided the performance venue; the local cultural partnership Androidus Project Tank provided facilities for the performance and the performers’ reception; and the Laboratory “Visual Anthropology: Image, Music, Text” of the Center for Research and Studies of the University of Crete provided videography/photography and Greek subtitling of the performance. These organizations all supported the action’s implementation.
