Equal Day 2026 Celebration at the University of Crete

ASTRONOMY FOR PEACE

On the day of the Equinox—when day and night are equal across the Earth—let us illuminate the universal truths revealed by astronomy through stargazing activities and educational events, by participating in the EQUAL DAY 2026 initiative. On this day, we aim for astronomy to unite the planet by promoting equality, peace, diversity, sustainability, and empathy.

“When the noise of war grows louder and the voice of peace seems to fade, we choose to lift our gaze upward. Above every border and beyond every conflict, the same stars shine silently for all of us. They do not ask what language we speak, they do not take sides—they simply shine. In classrooms, observatories, small communities, and large cities, we come together to express something simple yet powerful. And in times when darkness feels overwhelming, we can choose to respond with light.

‘Equal Day’ is our way of showing that astronomy is more than a science; it is a language of peace.

One shared horizon, one shared future.

Let us raise our voices together!”

— Jean-Pierre Sahbini, NAEC Beirut, Lebanon

At the University of Crete, the Equal Day 2026 events will span two days and are open to the entire educational community.
