On October 5, 2025, Erasmus students of the University of Crete participated in a guided tour along the Venetian Walls of Heraklion, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. The activity formed part of the Erasmus welcome programme for the winter semester 2025–2026, organized by the International and Public Relations Department of the University.
The Venetian Walls, the largest fortification in the Eastern Mediterranean, are a defining feature of Heraklion’s historical landscape. They famously withstood the longest siege in recorded history, the 21-year Siege of Candia (1648–1669), symbolizing both the strategic importance and resilience.
During the walk, participants explored Heraklion’s rich history and architectural heritage, while also learning about the diverse plant life that thrives along the fortifications. The tour provided an engaging introduction to the cultural and natural character of Heraklion, fostering interaction and shared experiences among the international student community.
Special recognition is extended to Mrs. Kallia Nikolidaki, whose expertise and storytelling brought the city’s history vividly to life, offering participants a memorable and insightful experience.
