Interdisciplinary Conference on Youth Resisting Dictatorship in Greece (1967-74) and beyond: Social Sciences and Humanities Perspectives”

 

The UCRC interdisciplinary conference “Youth Resistance against the 1967-74 Dictatorship in Greece” aims to raise awareness of remembrance, common history and values, as well as the Union’s aim that is to promote peace, its values and the well-being of its peoples by stimulating debate, reflection and development of networks.
Invitees include expert scholars (in and outside of Greece) addressing youth activism against the Greek dictatorship, from the social sciences and humanities. Its audience includes university students and faculty, as well as citizens/the wider public, from at least four EU countries. The main language of the conference will be English. Simultaneous translation will be provided during the two days of the conference, in Greek and English.
The conference will be welcomed by: Dimitris Mylonakis (Deputy Rector of Planning, Administrative Affairs and Student Welfare, Professor of Economics, University of Crete), Ana Mónica Fonseca (Center for International Studies, ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa), Konstantinos Tsoukalas (Emeritus Professor, Department of Political Science and Public Administration, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), Alexis Kalokerinos (Chairperson of The Society of Cretan Historical Studies / Historical Museum of Crete (SCHS/HMC, FYM partner), Professor of General Linguistics, Department of Philology, University of Crete), Nikos Papadakis (Deputy Director, UCRC, Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Crete) and Maria Kousis (Director, UCRC, Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Crete).
The first day of the conference includes talks on the thematic axes: “Cinema, Documentary and Resistance against the dictatorship”, “Literature, resistance against the dictatorship, historical fiction and teaching in the dictatorship”, “Music in Detention Centers and Censorship during the dictatorship”, “University Institutions and resistance against the dictatorship”, “The Student Movement against the dictatorship”.
The second day of the conference includes talks on the thematic axes: “Experiences and Perspectives by and for young people during the dictatorship”, “Narratives of resistance against the dictatorship”, “The Greek political context and the movement against the dictatorship”, “The movement against the dictatorship outside of Greece & the European integration”. The conference will conclude with a roundtable discussion on “Youth resisting dictatorship: a comparative view”, by Priska Daphi, Kostis Karpozilos, Óscar J. Martín García, José Pacheco Pereira, Katrin Uba.
Due to the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the multidisciplinary conference will be held online on 19-20 November 2021.
