May 20–21, 2025
University of Crete – Rethymnon Campus
The International Conference on Semantic Annotation for the Ancient World opens today at the University of Crete, bringing together scholars from the fields of digital humanities, philology, and artificial intelligence.
The conference explores the role of semantic annotation, hybrid AI, deep learning, and knowledge graphs in advancing research on the ancient world. Semantic annotation—the process of tagging or labeling elements in texts and images with contextual metadata—enables machines to interpret and connect historical data in meaningful ways. These technologies allow for enhanced searchability, data integration, and knowledge discovery, supporting more dynamic and scalable research workflows.
Discussions will focus on the application of these methods to ancient texts and artifacts, and on promoting openness, interoperability, and reusability through adherence to the FAIR principles and Linked Open Data standards.
The event is organized by the Department of Philology of the University of Crete, within the framework of the TALOS AI4SSH project, and aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in the study of the ancient world.
