On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the University of Crete and the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) hosted the naming ceremony of the state-of-the-art ‘200+’ telescope at Skinakas Observatory. The ceremony was attended by Ms. Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, President of the ‘Greece 2021’ Committee, whose pivotal support made this landmark achievement possible.
The “200+” telescope, funded through a €410,000 grant from the “Greece 2021” Committee, represents a major leap forward for scientific research, education, and innovation in Crete and across Greece. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the telescope will significantly enhance the Observatory’s capacity for astronomical research, data collection, and advanced training for young scientists.
During the ceremony, Rector of the University of Crete, Professor Georgios M. Kontakis, and FORTH President, Professor Vassilis Charmandaris, emphasized how this investment strengthens the Observatory’s role as one of Greece’s leading research infrastructures. Professor Vasso Pavlidou, Director of the Observatory, highlighted that the telescope doubles Skinakas’ observational power and opens new opportunities for international collaborations.
The Skinakas Observatory, jointly operated by the University of Crete and FORTH, continues to be a vital hub of astrophysical research and education, contributing to Greece’s global scientific standing.
