The Summer School in Classics: «Crete Past and Present», presented by the Division
of Classics at the University of Crete’s Department of Philology, came to a
triumphant end on Sunday, July 7, 2024. Thirty students of different academic
levels from prominent universities in Europe (Oxford, Edinburgh, Southampton,
Reading, Lincoln, Siena, Utrecht, Brussels, Athens, Patras) and America (Penn
State, New York University, University of Southern California, UFMG, Brazil), attended
the eight-day Summer School, which ran from June 30 to July 7, 24. The language
of instruction was English.
The Summer School combined academic instruction with hands-on learning to
introduce students to both the past and present of Crete. The Summer School’s
multidisciplinary methodology was built on an examination of both literary
works and Crete’s physical and intangible cultural heritage. Through an
in-class analysis of texts and inscriptions and field trips to museums and
significant locations on the island, participants had the chance to learn about
and become acquainted with the cultural diversity of Crete.
Teaching classes at the University Campus of Gallos
and educational field trips to Rethymno and Heraklion’s museums and ancient
sites (Knossos, Phaistos, Gortyna, Messara and the ancient Museums of Rethymno,
Heraklion) were included in the curriculum. The Department of Philology’s
Division of Classical Studies worked with the Ephorate of Antiquities of
Heraklion and the Hellenic Mediterranean University in addition to professors
from the Departments of Physics and Philology at the University of Crete and
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki to implement the Summer School program.
