The annual “William Stanley Moss” award ceremony at the University of Crete’s Department of Philosophy
On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, the annual “William Stanley Moss” Awards ceremony took place at the Senate Hall of the University of Crete, at the Gallos Campus in Rethymno. Gabriella Bullock, the sponsor and daughter of William Stanley Moss, was present with her husband, Hugh Bullock. In order to express her thanks to the Cretans for their valiant resistance throughout the Nazi occupation and for their unwavering support of her father, Billy Moss (1921–1965), as he was known.
Professor Konstantinos Spanoudakis, the Vice Rector of the University of Crete, gave the opening speech at the ceremony. The Dean of the faculty of philosophy, professor Stavroula Tsinorema, then gave a speech in which she discussed the significance of the award, briefly reviewed William Stanley Moss’s life and actions during the Second World War, and emphasized the value of the sponsor’s generous offer to fund doctoral and postgraduate research in the humanities. Next to speak was Mrs. Gabriella Bullock, who discussed the value of historical memory and the initiatives being made in her nation to make the prize stronger. Next, successful postgraduate students and doctorate candidates received their awards.
