The “University of the Third Age” welcomes its first students at Gallos Campus

The “University of the Third Age,” implemented by the Lifelong Learning Center of the University of Crete in collaboration with the eLearning Lab – Laboratory for Advanced Learning Technologies in Lifelong and Distance learning (EDIVEA) of the UoC Department of Primary Education, commenced its activities on October 29, 2025.

It was a moment of genuine joy and emotion for everyone involved, as a long-standing vision finally came to life. The first “students” of the program were warmly welcomed to Gallos campus in Rethymno, marking the beginning of a new chapter in community engagement and lifelong education.

Under the guidance of Professor Panagiotis Anastasiadis, participants were introduced to the campus and to the eLearning Lab, where they will take part in the experiential workshops on Digital Empowerment, specifically designed for citizens aged 60 and above. These sessions will be led by the certified program instructor Mr. Angelos Ritsatos.

With the support of Mr. Nikos Provias, Head of Sports at the University of Crete, participants also visited the gymnastics hall and the university gymnasium, where physical wellness activities will be conducted by Mr. Giannis Galeros, professional fitness instructor.

Warm thanks are extended to the Regional Unit of Rethymno for its continuous support, as well as to the Vice Mayor’s Offices of Sports, Education, Lifelong Learning, and Social Policy for their valuable collaboration.

The activities of the first thematic cycle are scheduled to conclude on December 19, 2025.

This initiative embodies the University of Crete’s enduring commitment to lifelong learning, social inclusion, and active aging. The “University of the Third Age” invites older adults to remain active, curious, and engaged members of society, proving that education has no age limit.
