On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., the second and final evaluation phase of the “My Thesis in 3 Minutes – 3MT” Competition will take place at the “Nikos Petridis” Amphitheater of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, University of Crete, at the Voutes Campus in Heraklion. The event will culminate in the selection and awarding of the three best doctoral thesis presentations.
The first and second prizes will be awarded by the Evaluation Committee for the top two presentations, while the third prize will be determined by audience vote. The awards are accompanied by cash prizes: €1,000 for first place, €750 for second place, and €500 for third place.
The competition, first successfully organized by the University of Crete in 2019 as the first initiative of its kind in Greece, is based on a concept developed in 2008 by the University of Queensland in Australia. Since then, it has been adopted by more than 600 universities across over 65 countries worldwide.
Doctoral candidates are encouraged to compete by presenting the subject, key findings, and significance of their research in just three minutes, with clarity, simplicity, accuracy, and accessibility. The aim of the competition is to highlight and disseminate the research conducted by PhD candidates at the University of Crete to the academic community, the business sector, and the wider public.
The first evaluation phase, which was completed on May 13, 2026, resulted in the selection of the 10 best doctoral presentations by the Evaluation Committee. This closed session was attended exclusively by committee members and participating candidates. The committee listened with great interest to 44 presentations, reflecting the wide range of research activity across the University of Crete.
The competition is conducted under the scientific supervision of Professor Maria Papadopoulou of the UoC Department of Computer Science and is organized by the Public Relations Department and the Welcome Office, with the contribution of the University of Crete’s Property Management and Development Company.
