On June 30, 2025, a scientific symposium was held at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion to honor Professor Eleftherios N. Economou on the occasion of his 85th birthday.

Professor Economou is internationally acclaimed for his pioneering work in condensed matter physics, particularly in disordered systems, electronic transport, and wave propagation in complex media. He is the author of the widely respected textbook Green’s Functions in Quantum Physics and has had a profound impact on the development of theoretical physics both in Greece and abroad.

A key figure in the early development of the University of Crete, Professor Economou joined the Department of Physics in 1981 and served as a full professor until 2007. He is now Professor Emeritus and remains deeply connected to the university’s academic life. Ηe was also a founding member and former Director of FORTH, helping to establish it as one of Greece’s leading research institutions.

The symposium featured presentations by leading researchers from around the world, highlighting recent advances in fields influenced by Professor Economou’s work.
