On October 22, 2025, the University of Crete welcomed the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Greece, Mr. Arif Mammadov, in Voutes Campus (Heraklion) for a courtesy visit.

Ambassador Mammadov met with Professor Maria Vamvakaki, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Lifelong Learning, and Research Policy, in the presence of Mr. Kostas Karamesinis, representative of the Embassy of Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, Professor Vamvakaki presented the mission, structure, and international engagement of the University of Crete. The discussion focused on opportunities for academic and research collaboration between the University of Crete and higher education institutions in Azerbaijan, with particular emphasis on strengthening ties between the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Crete and the Azerbaijan Medical University.

The visit concluded in a warm and cordial atmosphere, marked by an exchange of commemorative gifts. Ambassador Mammadov expressed his appreciation for the hospitality and warm welcome extended by the Rectorate of the University of Crete.
