YOUNG RESEARCHER AWARD
The award is addressed to young researchers (up to five years after obtaining their PhD), who have been working or have been working at the University of Crete as a Researcher for at least two years. Applicants may have any nationality and may have obtained their PhD in any country. The purpose of the award is to honour the young researcher who has excelled in research during his/her postdoctoral research at the University of Crete.The prize was awarded to :
- Vassilios Nikolaou, for the academic year 2023-2024.
- Stamatios Papadakis, for the academic year 2022-2023
- Virginia Panopoulou, for the academic year 2015-2016
- Ioannis Liodakis, for the academic year 2015-2016
- Alexandros Katsigiannis, for the academic year 2014-2015
- Ekaterini Koutra, for the academic year 2014-2015
- Ismeni Karakasilioti, for the academic year 2013-2014
- Lycurgos Bougas, for the academic year 2013-2014
- Ioannis Iatrakis, for the academic year 2012-2013
- Nikolaos Kyriazis, for the academic year 2012-2013
AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN DOCTORAL THESIS
The award is open to University of Crete PhDs who have supported their PhD thesis at the University of Crete up to two years before the deadline for submitting proposals for the award. The purpose of the award is to honour the University of Crete PhD student who has written an excellent PhD thesis.The prize was awarded to :
Aristeas Mavroyiannis, for the year 2023
Rafael Skalidis, for the year 2023
Mr. Rafael Sofiadis, for the year 2022
The "Research" award is addressed to members of the Teaching Staff who have been serving at the University of Crete for at least ten (10) years. Its purpose is to honour members of the teaching staff of the University of Crete who actively link their research to society, developing an activity that benefits the community.
The award was presented to :
Ilias Kiritsis, Professor of the Department of Physics, for the year 2023
Aikaterini Antoniou, Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, for the year 2022
SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AWARD
The award is addressed to the faculty members of the University of Crete. Its purpose is to honour members of the teaching staff of the University of Crete who actively link their research with society, developing activities that benefit the community.
The award was presented to :
Vasilios Harmandaris, Professor of the Department of Physics, for the year 2023
Christos Lionis, Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, for the year 2022
The notices of the other prizes shall specify the procedures and criteria for the evaluation of applications.

3MT Three Minute Thesis
The “3 Minute Thesis” is a research competition where Ph.D candidates of UoC present their research topic and its significance in three minutes, using appropriate language to a non-specialist audience. The “3 Minute Thesis” competition was based in an idea developed by the University of Queensland, Australia in 2008 and soon its popularity increased with more than 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide to organize the competition.
In Greece, it was held for the first time by the University of Crete in 2019.
