University of Crete History and Archaeology Students Explore the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna
On Saturday, October 12, 2024, a visit to the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna was organized with the participation of foreign and Greek students (ERASMUS+, PhD, etc.) and students from the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete. The goal of the trip was a guided tour of the museum and the temporary exhibition currently hosted there, titled “Pablo Picasso – The Joy of Life.”
The eponymous exhibition celebrates nature and life as depicted by Pablo Picasso in drawings, engravings, ceramics, paintings, and small sculptures (edit. Professor Nikolaos Stampolidis, General Director of the Acropolis Museum, and Paloma Picasso, daughter of the famous artist).
The exhibition focuses on the mythology of Crete, the joy of life, and the animal element. A total of 62 works are presented, mainly from Paloma Picasso’s personal collection, depicting mythical figures such as the famous Minotaur, as well as Fauns, Panes, Satyrs, as well as birds, herds of animals, warriors, scenes of dance and beauty. The works are displayed in showcases and open spaces, in direct dialogue with the antiquities, placed on pedestals, supports, or hung on the walls.
Warmest thanks to Professor N. Stamolidis for the welcoming of our students at the Museum of Ancient Eleutherna and their guidance in the exhibition “Pablo Picasso – The Joy of Life.”
More than 60 students from the Gallos (Rethymno) and Voutes (Heraklion) campuses, with the support of the guide and archaeologist N. Maragoudaki, they had the opportunity, among other things, to learn about the history of the ancient city of Eleutherna through the museum’s exhibits. A small, traditional treat followed. The brief tour, the wonderful view, but mainly the interaction that developed filled the participants with excitement.
Every year, students of the Department of History and Archaeology, from all cycles of studies, have the opportunity to be trained in field research, study, observation, recording, digitization, and the use of new technologies in archaeology.
We thank the Hellenic Red Cross, Rethymno Branch, for their contribution, as well as Public Bus Services Rethymno-Chania for the free and safe transportation of approximately 50 students from the Gallos Campus to the Museum of Eleutherna.
