Celebrating World Book Day 2026: “From Papyrus to Screen – Snapshots from the History of the Greek Book Across the Centuries”

The University of Crete Library and the Public Central Library of Rethymno are co-organizing an evening event on the occasion of World Book Day. The theme of the event is: “From Papyrus to Screen: Snapshots from the History of the Greek Book Across the Centuries.”

As part of the event, a special ceremony will be held by the University of Crete to honor the Rethymno Bar Association, in recognition of its long-term loan of its valuable library collection to the University of Crete Library.

At the same time, the opening of a book exhibition bearing the same title will take place. Prof. Georgios M. Kontakis, Rector of the University of Crete (UoC) will open the event and the program includes talks from members of the UoC academic community, highlighting key moments in the history of the Greek book, from the invention of papyrus and Byzantine manuscripts to modern printed works.

The event will take place on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the University of Crete Library, Gallos University Campus in Rethymno.
