University Rankings can be useful in seeing how the University compares with other Universities nationally and internationally. As there is no single ‘gold standard’, there are significant differences in the methodologies used by ranking agencies that can give rise to variation in results for the same University in different rankings.

Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE WUR)

The 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings is the fifth in this series  of global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using calibrated indicators  for comparison across the four broad areas of  research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.

Participating for the second time in 2023 edition, University of Crete (UoC) is ranked amongst 1,591 universities from 112 countries and regions. UoC is ranked overall 401-600, and second at the list of the 11 Greek Universities included in the 2023 ranking. The UoC is particularly proud of the efforts of staff and students in their best practice contributions to SDG4 Quality Education, with UoC recognized as being among the top 100 institutions globally.

Times Higher Education Impact Ranking
(THE Impact)

Ranked =78, the University was in the top 100 of the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2022. In terms of research influence, as measured by citations, University of Crete was in a leading position at #36 among the 906 universities were included in the 2022 ranking. For the year 2023, no ranking was carried out for the Universities.

Times Higher Education Young University Rankings (THE Young University)

Reflecting in particular its citations strengths, University of Crete is ranked 94th in the 2023 THE Young University Rankings and first among the Greek Universities that participate. This is the twelfth year running that the University of Crete has been included among the top 100 best research-intensive universities under 50 years old.

The US News

The US News 2022-2023 Best Global Universities Rankings, powered by Clarivate Analytics, now includes just over 2,000 of the world’s universities ranked according to academic research performance and their global and regional reputations. University of Crete is ranked #605 worldwide, #249 in Europe, and #4 of the 15 Universities ranked in Greece. In terms of research impact, as indicated by ‘Normalized Citation Impact’, the University ranks #446 worldwide. It is also notable, given the significance of international collaboration as a marker of quality, that the UoC ranks #145 worldwide on this performance indicator.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2022 includes the University of Crete among the 1300 major universities worldwide in its bibliometric analyses of scientific performance. This ranking includes only those HEIs that have produced at least 800 Web of Science indexed ‘core publications’ in the period 2017–2020 (using fractional counting). Indicating the impact of research papers adjusted for size, the UoC scores 10.3% for the proportion of its publications belonging to the top 10% of their fields (PP top 10%) , the second highest of the 8 Greek HEIs listed. Nature Index lists all institutions with publications in the prestigious portfolio of Nature journals. University of Crete is included at #233 by publication share among the 895 European Academic Institutions listed in the 2022 Nature Index tables.

World University Rankings

The University of Crete takes part in the QS World University Rankings and was listed 534 overall out of the 1500 universities ranked by QS in 2024 (up from 1422 last year), and #4 of the 8 Greek HEIs included in this ranking. Citations per faculty, at 158 globally, ranking second among the participating Greek Universities, is the strongest indicator for UoC and underlines the impact of UoC research.

Multirank

The University also participates in U-MULTIRANK. The latter is open to all types of higher education institutions and compares and grades HEI performance across five broad dimensions (teaching and learning, regional engagement, knowledge transfer, international orientation and research). The Ready Made Rankings tool again shows that the University’s primary strengths are in research and research linkages.
